Green Heights Mall holds tree-planting ceremony

By Victor Lim

KUCHING: Green Heights Mall held a tree-planting ceremony near its main entrance yesterday to commemorate World Earth Day.

Its executive director, David Hilton Smith, in his speech at the event, said tree-planting was a valuable activity that people undertook to help Mother Earth.

He explained the importance of trees in contributing to the environment and it was the responsibility of mankind to protect the environment.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide in appreciation of the Mother Earth, nature and wildlife.

"It is time to seriously evaluate the things that we have done, should have done and should be doing to preserve this earth, not just for ourselves but for the generations to come," he said.

The management of Green Heights Mall hoped to make a difference with the tree-planting yesterday. The mall is unique as it is Kuching's first suburban concept mall that vows to be eco-friendly and neighbourhood-friendly by incorporating sustainable business practices into its daily operations, including the usage of eco-friendly bags and putting up recycling bins on its compound. The uniqueness is reflected in its tagline 'Neighbourhood Small Mall'.

Green Heights Mall set up based on years of survey on people's needs within the Green Height vicinity, is expected to be open in June.

Jesse Ling Sik Woo, when interviewed, said their setting up of Green Heights and Borneo Garden Neighbourhood Committee was supported by the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation.

The committee presently has 25 members and all of them are tackling problems on security, environmental issues, cleanliness and complaints in the areas they cover.

The 'My Beautiful Home, Planet Earth' contest carries the theme that focuses on nature-related images. Participants are required to capture images of nature or wildlife that highlight the wondrous beauty of Earth.

Earth Day is an annual celebration of the environment and is a special day to appreciate our planet. It is also a time to evaluate the works that are still needed to protect beautiful Earth.

From its humble beginnings in the United States 38 years ago, Earth Day is now observed the world over. Although there is no central organising force or an official body governing the movement, several non-governmental organisations work to keep track of the thousands of related events in their local communities.

Green Heights Mall, in line with its ongoing 'Go Green' campaign, hopes to make a difference at the local level with this contest.

The contest is organised with the aim of creating awareness and appreciation of the beautiful details that Earth has to offer, in terms of nature and wildlife.

The contest begins today (April 12) and closes on April 28. All entries must be received before 5pm on April 28. Winners will be notified on May 6.

All photos submitted are non-returnable and would be used as part of an exhibition, scheduled to be held at the mall later this year.
